Dr. Roba worked in Houston Northwest Medical Center for 18 years. During his tenure at the hospital, he had taken several trips to Africa. These trips have transformed Dr. Roba’s life and sent him on an introspective and altruistic journey that has benefited thousands of humans and animals.
While in Ethiopia, he saw that people young and old were dying of easily treatable diseases. With his cousin, he established the International Fund for Africa. This organization has coordinated the contribution of modern neonatal units. The day before unveiling these units, a premature child was born. Rather than wait for the presentation ceremony to use the units, Dr. Roba ordered one of the units to be turned on and used to save this child’s life. He has coordinated several medical trips to the rural areas of Ethiopia, where thousands of people traveled as much as 100 miles on foot to be treated for tumors, cataracts and other treatable conditions.
Their most recent program, School Health and Nutrition Program, provides schoolchildren in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, with nutritious vegan breakfast and lunch. The program was started on the premise that if the children didn’t have to worry about whether or not they would eat, they might do better at school. Since the start of this program, attendance has doubled, and the children’s school aptitude has increased significantly.
Dr. Roba has written in various internet-based media publications on issues of child care in Africa, the environmental and health consequences of meat and dairy consumption in Africa, global hunger, and poverty. He has also contributed a chapter in the recently released book Rethink Food. He also has contributed a chapter to the book, Circle of Compassion, edited by Dr W. Tuttle, and is about to release a book he co-authored about Africa and her animals. He has been the subject of numerous news articles, media stories and interviews and is recipient of many awards including The Gandhi Peace Award (Society of Peace Oct 2007), Circle of Compassion Award (Human Society of the United States, Nov 2007), Certificate of Merit Award (Ministry of Health of Ethiopia, and Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 2009), Certificate of Appreciation Award (Addis Ababa Health Bureau and Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).
