Whole Body Cryotherapy in Kingsport, TN

Whole Body Cryotherapy in Kingsport, TN

What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?

Whole body cryotherapy is the practice of chilling the skin to subzero temperatures for a short period of time in an effort to stimulate circulation and blood flow throughout the body. The procedure is most often used to decrease inflammation, increase cellular survival and improve overall health. Cryotherapy is most often used for its healing properties, but it can also be used for weight lossanti-aging  and the management of some autoimmune diseases .

How is Whole Body Cryotherapy Performed?

The procedure itself is sometimes compared to water or ice treatments, but instead of sitting in freezing water, patients sit or stand in a comfortable chamber that is lowered to a temperature between -166°F and -220°F. This extreme cold tricks the body into a hypothermic state, which redirects blood flow from the skin's surface and extremities to the body's core to protect vital organs and maintain the body's internal temperature. As blood is circulated to the core, toxins are flushed and the blood becomes enriched with oxygen and nutrients.

Before entering the cryotherapy chamber, patients are required to dress in protective clothing—including cotton socks and gloves. The chamber doors can't be locked, so claustrophobic patients can feel comfortable knowing they can exit the chamber at any time. Once in the chamber, only the patient's face is visible. The air in the chamber is cooled with blasts of gasiform liquid nitrogen using compressor technology, and the cold air doesn't cause any damage to the skin or internal organs. There should be a trained operator or a physician on hand throughout the entire procedure to monitor the patient's progress.

During this two- to three-minute procedure, the cooled air flows over the skin, decreasing its temperature by more than 30°F. Cryotherapy is effective because it is able to safely lower body temperature while keeping the patient's core temperature at a safe level. Following this procedure, the enriched blood rushes back through the body, accelerating the natural recovery process in affected areas.

Results of Whole Body Cryotherapy:

There is no downtime following a whole body cryotherapy procedure, and patients have their full range of motion in all muscles and joints. In addition to improving blood circulation, cryotherapy also aids the brain in releasing natural “feel-good” endorphins that help the body adapt to the extreme cold during treatment. These endorphins have been shown to increase energy levels, improve mood and help fight depression. Other immediate benefits of whole body cryotherapy include:

  • Enhanced immune system function
  • Improved blood flow
  • Pain relief
  • Shortened recovery time
  • Improved sleep quality

Whole body cryotherapy benefits everybody, from elite athletes hoping to speed up recovery time to those seeking a weight-loss alternative. Although this procedure is most often used for athletes, it provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that can drastically improve some joint disorder—including rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Whole body cryotherapy can also be used for:

  • Weight loss: Cryotherapy can be used as part of a weight-loss program because it causes the body to burn 500 to 800 calories per procedure. Whole body cryotherapy can also increase metabolism by up to three times its normal rate and reduce cellulite.
  • Anti-aging : Frequent cryotherapy treatments help tighten skin and prevent wrinkles. The intense cold activates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, tightening and firming it up.
  • Chronic pain management : Cryotherapy has been proven to reduce inflammation and swelling, which is often tied to chronic pain. This procedure can be particularly effective when managing pain around the joints or tendons.
